In the 7th century, it was the capital of ancient Egypt when the arabs conqured. It was tanis called san because of lot of rocks and stones. Means in Arabic hagar then it is called san-al –hagar.

 

There is some stone blocks found in tanis held the name of cheops which dating back to the old kingdom.
It is located about 150 km to north east of cairo.The walls of city was built of mud brick stones.
Ramses II constructed three temples in tanis:the grand temple, the small temple, and the temple of gods.
This site was used to host large number of obelisks in many location.
[Tanis] name derived from the ancient egyptian language and [san] the Coptic name that is mentioned from the old testament.
