Before we even sat down for our all-you-can-eat pasta buffet (yes that's right: it's an ALL! You-can-eat pasta buffet); the first thing we noticed - as you pass the large jungle-like doors - is that Africano is an architecturally innovative restaurant. Featuring a dramatic limestone arch in the open-air dining area; shades of blues, reds and yellows which create a horizon totally unlike Cairo; methodically placed furniture and African mementos that produce an overall exotic ambience; but most importantly of all - the laid-back lifestyle and coziness.
This two-leveled hideaway is the perfect restaurant from which to explore the delights of a very vast and varied menu; and on this particular day, my taste buds made new culinary discoveries, while my companion was just content to fill his stomach with massive amounts of food for one, economical price of LE12.99. The clientele are mostly students and faculty from the nearby universities and schools (as well as us: employees, who, for an hour, played hooky from work because we'd heard so much about their cuisines).
This all-you-can-eat exercise in gluttony is regarded as the holy grail of food consumption ( and Africano is the crown jewel of all-you-can-eat. The infinite dishes of spaghetti, penne, and taglitalle are amazing, as your choice of: white, tomato or Bolognese sauce blankets the pasta with tangy goodness. The staff is personable and accommodating, keeping your plate constantly full of food (the most important factor of all-you-can-eat); and the atmosphere is designed to keep good times going, with a state-of-the-art sound system that fills the air with an array of music while TV's are tuned to whatever you want.
The chefs cook your favorite pasta combination right in front of you and offers patrons the opportunity to combine any pasta with any sauce. You'll be hard pressed to find an unappetizing selection and as we found out; it doesn't really matter how unorthodox your ingredient choices are; there's no question you want to dive into the chef's saucepans; since they're very skilled at producing flavors in comforting combinations. The white sauce is creamy and thick, full of taste, while the tomato sauce has a delicious kick to it.
The buffet also offers extremely delicious soup (which changes daily), and is unequivocally the worst possible thing to do to a person who is attempting to keep a balance between his diet coke and his large plate of pasta.
By the end of my lunch hour, I had proven my hypothesis: my favorite part of Africano was definitely the food - or was it the all-you-can-eat food? Anyway, both were remarkably beautiful.
